Cyber Threats Are Rising—Is Nigeria Ready?

According to Check Point Software Technologies' Global Threat Index (January 2025), Nigeria has climbed from 14th to 11th place among the most cyber-attacked nations in Africa.

Here’s how the countries stack up:

Ethiopia –The most attacked country in Africa (100% risk index).
Zimbabwe – 5th place.
Angola – 9th place.
Uganda – 10th place.
Nigeria – 11th place (and rising).
Kenya – 14th place.
Ghana & Mozambique – 16th and 17th place.

Interestingly, South Africa (66th) and Egypt (97th) are relatively safer, but let’s not get too comfortable. Cybercriminals don’t care about borders.

Most targeted industries in January 2025?

Finance – Money is the root of all??
Education – Students & staff are easy phishing targets.
Government – Sensitive data = prime cyber loot.
Telecommunications – Hacker’s love messing with networks.

FakeUpdates: The Scam Draining Nigerians Dry

One of the biggest threats right now is FakeUpdates, a social engineering trick used by cybercriminals to deceive users into downloading malware disguised as software updates. This deceptive tactic installs:

Info-stealers– Hacker’s snatch login details, banking info, and emails.
Crypto drainers – Say goodbye to your Bitcoin and other assets.
Remote Access Trojans (RATs) – Attackers can control your device remotely.
Ransomware – Your files are locked, and criminals demand payment.

Nigeria's banking, education, finance and government sectors have been hit hard, with criminals exploiting vulnerabilities in digital infrastructure. If you see a random pop-up asking you to update your software—DO NOT CLICK! Always update apps and browsers from official sources.

AI is Fueling Cybercrime—How Do We Fight Back?

According to Maya Horowitz, VP of Research at Check Point, cybercriminals are now using AI to automate and scale their attacks. This means:

Attacks happen faster and more frequently.
AI-generated phishing emails are harder to detect.
Deepfake scams and fake identities are becoming more convincing.

So, what’s the solution?

·      Security Operations Center(SOC) services.

·      Threat Intelligence solutions.

·      Vulnerability Assessment and Continuous Monitoring.
